SHH Leaders Meet for Summit

SHH Leadership 2008

Nearly forty of the finest minds SHH has to offer met at UVA for the first inter-chapter leadership summit. During the eight-hour conference, students from UVA, the University of Mary Washington, Virginia Tech, Hollins University, Georgetown University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Christopher Newport University met their counterparts at other chapters, discussed the upcoming Walkathon cause, participated in workshops, and heard from a guest speaker.

UVA chapter presidents Joe Pohlcamp and Laurie Paguio opened with a warm welcome and introductions. UMW president Justin Simeone followed with an in-depth discussion of this year’s new theme: the SHH Women’s Academy. In the afternoon, workshops were conducted on Events Planning, Business Outreach & Marketing, Grantwriting, and Technology. Members from all six schools shared their strengths and pooled ideas and energy. Dave Moore and Ross Serino of UMW also unveiled the first-ever SHH Newsletter.

To close the conference, guest speaker Alana Levinson, a UVA professor and administrator of the Summer Writers’ Workshop, informed members on how to best tell their most meaningful Honduras-related story. All the attendees were incredibly impressed by her knowledge and impact.

The day wound down at a local restaurant, with SHH energy still pouring forth amidst considerable food, laughter, and planning. We all thank UVA and chapter leaders Laurie Paguio, Joe Pohlcamp, and Alex Escobar for putting together an amazing conference, and everyone who attended for their amazing insight, dedication, and hard work.

We can’t wait until next time!
