SHH Projects

We carry out multiple projects each year, focusing on education as well as improving the quality of life. Some of our primary projects include:

Stove Project [1]

A team of seven UMW students and their professor recently spent a week in Honduras conducting extensive interviews with more than 50 families suffering from indoor air pollution from wood-burning stoves--the fourth-leading cause of death for children under 5 in developing countries. Indoor air pollution has similar affects as smoking during pregnancy; it's as if children are smokers at birth.

Copprome [3]

Copprome is a small orphanage founded in 1982 by Sister Teresita Gonzalez with the support of community members of El Progreso. The center provides schooling and nourishment to more than 60 orphaned, abused, and abandoned children. The children, mostly girls, range in age from 4 to 19.

Siete de Abril [5]

Siete de Abril is the largest squatter community in El Progreso, housing over 75 families with more than 200 children. It is also the poorest neighborhood in the entire city; the families here have no access to healthcare, clean water, or proper housing. Their homes are made of cardboard, plastic, and rotting tin, giving them little protection from the rain.

Por Venir School [7]

Por Venir Elementary School serves nearly 400 students from the neighborhood of Por Venir as well as several surrounding communities. When it rains, the roof leaks so badly classes must be canceled. Multiple grades meet in the schoolhouse at the same time, with no walls to separate them. The school is so crowded that older students are forced to attend in the evenings, working with very little light.
