Summer Interships in Honduras

christiannicolegabrieladaniela.jpg

Dates: June 5th to June 27th

Are you interested in international relations? Want to better understand the urban and rural poor? Have a desire to investigate some of the most basic forms of development?

Come spend part of your summer in El Progreso getting to know the people of Villa Soleada, while investigating and implementing sustainable agriculture programs for their community. Learn the difficulties that they face on a daily basis by living, learning and working as part of the community.

Activities

The 2010 internship will begin by spending several days with members of the Villa Soleada community at a seminar on sustainable agriculture. Together, the interns and community members will work to implement three projects based on the techniques and sample projects that they have seen. At the end of the fellowship, the fellows will have to put together a presentation on how their projects should best be continued in their absence, even getting the chance to delegate additional funds for one of the projects for future expenses.

What You Will Gain

This fellowship is meant to give students hands on experience and education about 3rd world development for the urban and rural poor. Students will gain and understanding of the past and future struggles and complications of 3rd world development, especially in Central America. Learn about the historic struggle for land that has shaped the past century of development and possibly the next century as well. Come get you hands dirty, as you learn along side a community what it takes to develop sustainable agriculture projects. By the end of your fellowship, you will truly leave behind the fruits of you labor for the villagers to enjoy and hopefully to sustain their way of life. This summer, experience Honduras in a whole new way.

Requirements

All applicants will need to have a firm understanding of the Spanish language, as the majority of all field work and project research will be conducted in Spanish. If accepted as a summer fellow, you will be required to read three books and several articles prior to arriving in Honduras. You will have bimonthly meetings with your site coordinator, leading up to the internship to make sure that you are prepared for this summer’s experience. Completion of the required texts and presence for online bimonthly meetings are requirements for participation in this summers experience in Honduras. Applications are due to Walker Somerville (walker@studentshelpinghonduras.org) by February 28th.

Costs

Program costs are $2250. Students will also be required to purchase travelers insurance on their own. Please note that due to the limited resources of SHH as well as the selective nature of this program, financial aid is not available.
