Villa Soleada

Background

Formerly known as Homes for Siete de Abril, this project consists of the construction of approximately fifty homes. Due to realities on the ground (see here), SHH was unable to build on-site at Siete de Abril. Instead, we purchased a plot of land in the neighborhood of Las Brisas. Ground was broken in Villa Soleada, or "Sunshine Village," on December 17th, 2007. Present were the President of the Honduran Congress, Roberto Michelletti, the mayor of El Progreso, Alexander Lopez, villagers from Siete de Abril, local news media, and more than 30 SHH members from the U.S.

Villagers from Siete de Abril are helping to construct their new homes alongside SHH volunteers. Once complete, each 23’x27’ home will include three bedrooms, a central room, bathroom, and shower, and will be stilted approximately two feet to accommodate floodwaters in the rainy season. Children will be able to attend the school in the adjoining colonia, Las Brisas. The project is currently ongoing, and is expected to take 12-18 months to complete. Future plans call for the construction of a community center, soccer field, and other community-building projects.
